About two weeks ago, I read Eliana & Maci the very first story in the Beginner's Bible. The story describes the creation of the world from nothing (number of words E & M understood from that sentence: zero...). They listen to the stories, but there are many unfamiliar words in each story (for instance
Ark...because the people
sinned, etc.).
Teaching the girls about God & our faith was something we prayed about as we waited for them to come home, but once they got home, it seemed so difficult to put into words that they could understand. So, apart from teaching them how to pray in English (they had prayed at each meal at the Ethiopian care center, so that was familiar territory), & saying "God helped heal your ouchie" & other such motherly words, we hadn't formally commenced their spiritual education.
Well, last Sunday marked the beginning of the next quarter for Sunday School, & we decided Eliana was ready to give the class a try (with Mommy, of course). She learned (we think she did, at least) about Jesus taking time to bless the children. This week she learned about Jesus healing the two blind men (I think I was able to get the concept of
blind across, but I can't be sure), & how Jesus meets our needs (again, not sure I got
needs across).
Anyway, considering the poor child's limited understanding of the Bible, I was amazed at Sunday School yesterday when she pointed out Jesus on a poster on the wall, calling to the disciples in the boat (a story she hat definitely not heard). She sure figured out that quickly!! A bearded guy with a white dress looking thing with a blue sash!! A ha!! Jesus!
Seriously, how do you begin to explain the tenderness in the heart of Jesus that brought these precious treasures to us? How do we put into words the kindness He showed in saving them from death just for
us? Maybe someday we can put it into words. Maybe.
